Benefits & Financial Support
The MEXT Research Student Scholarship is fully funded, covering entrance examination fees, matriculation fees, and tuition fees at Japanese universities. It provides a monthly living allowance (stipend) of ¥143,000 for non-regular research students/preparatory course students, ¥144,000 for Master's/professional degree students, and ¥145,000 for Doctoral students. An additional regional allowance of ¥2,000-¥3,000 per month is provided for students in designated high-cost regions. Round-trip economy class airfare from the home country to Japan and a return flight upon completion of studies are also covered. Preparatory Japanese language education (6-12 months) is fully funded if required. Based on an approximate exchange rate of 1 JPY = 0.59 INR, the annual stipend ranges from approximately 1,012,440 INR to 1,026,600 INR.
Inclusions
Nationality:Applicants must have the nationality of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan. Individuals holding Japanese nationality at the time of application are not eligible. Dual nationals must renounce their Japanese nationality by the date of their arrival in Japan.
Age Limit:Applicants must have been born on or after April 2, 1992 (for the 2027 intake).
Target Degree Levels:The scholarship is for graduate or post-graduate students intending to pursue a Master's or Doctoral degree, or to conduct research as non-degree research students at a Japanese institution.
For Master's study:Applicants must have completed 16 years of formal education or an academic program equivalent to a Bachelor's degree of at least 3 years.
For Doctoral study:Applicants must hold a Master's degree or an overseas degree equivalent to a Master's or professional degree.
Health:Applicants must submit a health certificate in the prescribed format, signed by a physician, attesting to no physical or mental conditions hindering study in Japan.
Japanese Language:Applicants must be willing to learn Japanese and adapt to living in Japan.
Arrival in Japan:Applicants must be able to arrive in Japan within the periods specified by MEXT (typically April 1-7, 2027, or during the period specified by the accepting university for the September/October 2027 term).

Submit the complete application package to the Japanese Embassy or Consulate in your home country by their designated deadline, which is typically between April and May of the year prior to the scholarship start (e.g., April-May 2026 for April 2027 intake). Do not send documents directly to MEXT in Japan.
- 6Undergo First Screening
Participate in the First Screening, which usually comprises a document review, written academic examinations (typically in English and/or Japanese), and an interview conducted by the Embassy/Consulate. This usually takes place between May and August.
- 7Seek Provisional Acceptance
If you pass the First Screening, you will be instructed to contact Japanese universities to obtain a Letter of Provisional Acceptance from a prospective academic supervisor. - 8Final Selection & Placement
MEXT in Japan conducts the Second Screening and makes the final selection of scholarship recipients and university placements. You will be notified of the results between January and March of the scholarship year.
- 9Prepare for Departure
Upon successful final selection, make necessary preparations for travel to Japan for the start of your scholarship period (April or September/October 2027).
