The UGC Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) provides a monthly stipend of ₹37,000 for the first two years. Upon satisfactory progress and upgradation to Senior Research Fellowship (SRF), the stipend increases to ₹42,000 per month for the subsequent three years. In addition to the monthly stipend, fellows receive an annual contingency grant: For Humanities & Social Sciences, it is ₹10,000 per annum for JRF and ₹20,500 per annum for SRF. For Science scholars, it is ₹12,000 per annum for JRF and ₹25,000 per annum for SRF. House Rent Allowance (HRA) is provided as per Government of India norms, unless suitable single-seated hostel accommodation is provided, in which case only hostel fees (excluding mess, electricity, water charges, etc.) are covered. Medical benefits are also included. The fellowship and grants are disbursed through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to Aadhaar-seeded accounts.

The tenure of the fellowship is initially for two years under the JRF scheme. After this period, the fellow's research work is evaluated by experts.
