The Official Modified Bavarian Formula Math
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and Uni-Assist use the following mathematical equation to convert foreign grades into the German scale:
$$\text{German Grade } (V) = 1 + 3 \times \left( \frac{N_{\max} - N_d}{N_{\max} - N_{\min}} \right)$$
Where:
- $V$: The resulting German grade (rounded to 1 decimal place).
- $N_{\max}$: The maximum possible grade in your Indian system (e.g. 10.0 or 100%).
- $N_{\min}$: The minimum passing grade in your Indian university (e.g. 4.0, 4.5, or 40%).
- $N_d$: Your achieved Indian CGPA or percentage.
Indian University Passing Grade ($N_{\min}$) Edge Cases
One of the biggest mistakes Indian students make is using an incorrect minimum passing grade ($N_{\min}$) in the formula.

⚠️ Crucial Warning: If your Indian university official transcript explicitly states that passing is 5.0 CGPA (like Anna University), you MUST set $N_{\min} = 5.0$. Setting $N_{\min} = 4.0$ by mistake will artificially lower your German grade!
Scenario: An Indian Student from VTU with 8.2 CGPA
- $N_{\max} = 10.0$
- $N_{\min} = 4.0$
- $N_d = 8.2$
$$V = 1 + 3 \times \left( \frac{10.0 - 8.2}{10.0 - 4.0} \right) = 1 + 3 \times \left( \frac{1.8}{6.0} \right) = 1 + 3 \times 0.3 = 1.9$$
