The Humboldt Research Fellowship offers a monthly stipend, which varies based on the researcher's career stage. Postdoctoral researchers receive €3,000 per month, while experienced researchers receive €3,600 per month. Based on an approximate exchange rate of 1 EUR = 90 INR (subject to fluctuation as of September 2026), this translates to approximately INR 3,240,000 annually for postdocs and INR 3,888,000 annually for experienced researchers. In addition to the monthly stipend, fellows receive a mobility allowance of €100 per month, and usually a subsidy towards the cost of medical and liability insurance (€70 or €130 per month). Further financial support includes family allowances for accompanying partners and children, subsidies for private full health insurance, allowances for travel expenses, and an intensive German language course for the fellow and their partner prior to the research stay. Research hosts in Germany may also receive a subsidy towards research costs. Payments are disbursed monthly. Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to Aadhaar-seeded accounts is not applicable as this is an international fellowship to Germany.

Doctorate Completion:

Postdoctoral Researchers:Doctorate or comparable academic degree completed less than four years prior to the date of application. Candidates nearing completion (within six months) may also apply by submitting their dissertation manuscript or publications.

Experienced Researchers:Doctorate or comparable academic degree completed less than twelve years prior to the date of application. If a doctorate is uncommon in the field/country, an application may be submitted up to 16 years after completing a Master's or equivalent degree, provided there is a commensurate publication record.

Your chosen academic host in Germany must provide a detailed statement, a mentoring agreement, and written confirmation that research facilities are available. Your host will receive a link to upload these documents after you submit your initial application.

Submit all required documents through the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation's online application portal. Your application will only be forwarded to the Humboldt Foundation once your host has uploaded all their necessary documents, and the portal is open for applications.
