Benefits & Financial Support
The scholarship is fully funded, covering full tuition fees for the 3.5-year PhD program. It includes a stipend of £26,500 (2026-27 rate) per annum to assist with living costs, which is approximately 3,392,000 INR annually (using an exchange rate of 1 GBP = 128 INR). Additionally, a consumables fund of £2,000 per annum (approximately 256,000 INR) is provided for the first 3 years of study. The scholarship also offers tailored assistance for students with disabilities, visa support for international students, free English Language Courses for international students, and access to a program of bespoke opportunities and events delivered by the Early Career Researcher Institute (ECRI).
Inclusions
Academic Achievement:Must be a high-achieving undergraduate or Master's student. Hold or expect to receive a first-class UK undergraduate degree or its equivalent. Candidates with a standalone Master's qualification must have achieved (or be about to achieve) a distinction. If holding multiple standalone Master's degrees, distinction in the one most relevant to the proposed PhD is required.
Research Potential:Demonstrate excellent academic performance and promising research potential.
Supervisor:Must have made contact with a supervisor in an academic department at Imperial College London who has agreed to supervise the research project. Each supervisor is limited to supervising one scholar at any given time.
New Applicants:The scheme is only open to new PhD applications. Current registered Imperial PhD students are not eligible.
Nationality:Applications are accepted from talented candidates from Imperial College London, the UK, and worldwide, with no restrictions on nationality.
Study Mode:The scholarship applies to both full-time and part-time study.
English Language:International applicants must meet Imperial College's English language requirements, typically demonstrated through IELTS or TOEFL.
Start Dates:Eligible funded start dates for the 2026-27 academic year range from 1 August to 1 November 2026.

Selection Process
The selection process is highly competitive and merit-based, not considering financial need. There are approximately 50 scholarships available.
Candidates are assessed by the Faculties and a College Selection Panel based on two main criteria:
Academic Excellence:Demonstrated by past academic results, transcripts, relative class position, awards, and distinctions.
Research Potential:Demonstrated by the candidate's research experience to date, their interest in discovery, the quality and potential contribution of their research plan/proposal, and performance at an interview (which is also reflected in the departmental statement).
The selection process involves two stages:
Departmental Review:Candidates meeting or predicted to meet the eligibility criteria are reviewed by the department to which they have applied. Departments select a shortlist of candidates to present to the College Selection Panel.
College Selection Panel:The final decision is made by a panel comprising the Vice-Provost (Research), the Director of the Graduate School, and the Faculty Vice-Deans for Research.
Renewal Policy
The scholarship provides comprehensive financial support for the entire 3.5-year duration of the PhD program
Renewal for subsequent years is contingent upon satisfactory academic progress and adherence to the program's requirements.
Application Process
- 1Identify a Supervisor
Before applying, you must contact and secure agreement from a potential academic supervisor in an Imperial College London department who is willing to oversee your research project.
- 2Prepare Documents
Gather all necessary application documents, including your two-page personal statement (incorporating your research proposal), academic transcripts, and contact details for two academic referees (who are not your proposed PhD supervisor).
- 3Submit Online Application for Admission
There is no separate scholarship application form. You must submit your application for admission to study a PhD at Imperial College London through their online admissions system.
- 4Select Scholarship Option
Within the 'funding' section of the 'additional questions' tab in the online application form, ensure you select the option to be considered for the President's PhD Scholarship scheme.
- 5Departmental and College Review
Your application will first be reviewed by your chosen department for academic merit and research potential. If shortlisted by the department, your application will then be forwarded to the College Selection Panel for a final decision.
