Benefits & Financial Support
The Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program is a fully funded scholarship covering up to three years of graduate study at Stanford University. Scholars receive a fellowship that directly covers full tuition and associated fees. Additionally, a generous stipend is provided for living and academic expenses, which includes costs such as room and board, books, academic supplies, instructional materials, local transportation, and reasonable personal expenses. A travel stipend for one annual economy-class trip to and from Stanford is also included. Newly enrolled scholars receive a one-time relocation stipend. Scholars in their second and third years may apply for supplemental funds to support academic enrichment activities like conference travel. For degrees exceeding three years (e.g., MD, PhD), the remaining funding beyond the three years is provided by the scholar's home department. An estimated annual cost of attendance, including tuition and living expenses, for a single graduate student at Stanford for 2026-2027 can be approximately $140,940 USD (roughly 11,778,490 INR at an exchange rate of 1 USD = 83.5 INR).

Selection Process
The selection process for the Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program is highly competitive, typically resulting in an acceptance rate of around one percent. There is no single formula for admission; instead, the application invites candidates to demonstrate their unique strengths in three core criteria:
Independence of Thought:Ability to drive change and innovation.
Purposeful Leadership:Demonstrated ability to lead and make a positive impact.
Civic Mindset:Commitment to contributing to the greater good.
Applicants must complete two separate, concurrent applications: one for the Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program and another for their chosen full-time Stanford graduate degree program. Both applications are reviewed independently by different admission committees. Admission to a Stanford graduate program is a prerequisite but does not guarantee selection as a Knight-Hennessy Scholar. Likewise, a strong KHS application does not guarantee Stanford admission.
While there is no minimum GPA for the Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program itself, applicants must meet the minimum academic requirements of their specific Stanford graduate degree program. Competitive candidates often have a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.7 or higher.
Selection Stages:
Initial Review:Applications are reviewed based on the core criteria and academic competitiveness for the chosen Stanford program.
Video Statement Invitation:Approximately 500 top applicants, identified as desirable by both the KHS and their target Stanford departments, are invited to submit a video statement.
Finalist Invitation & Immersion Weekend:Around 180 finalists are invited to an in-person immersion weekend at Stanford in early March, which includes interviews and further assessment.
Final Decision:Final scholarship decisions are typically announced in mid-March.
Renewal Policy
The Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program provides funding for up to three years of graduate study. If a scholar's degree program (such as an MD or PhD) exceeds three years, the home academic department at Stanford is responsible for funding the remainder of the education, consistent with its standard funding commitments for that specific program.
Scholars wishing to pursue an additional graduate program may apply to KHS for supplemental funding, also up to the three-year maximum, though this additional funding is not guaranteed. The scholarship does not allow deferrals of offers; if a selected scholar cannot enroll, they must reapply for the year they intend to enroll.
Application Process
- 1Review Eligibility & Criteria
Carefully read the eligibility requirements, especially regarding your undergraduate degree date and the types of Stanford graduate programs that are eligible. Understand the three core selection criteria: Independence of Thought, Purposeful Leadership, and Civic Mindset.
- 2Identify Stanford Graduate Program
Research and select a full-time Stanford graduate degree program that aligns with your academic and professional goals. Confirm the program's specific admission requirements and deadlines.
- 3Create Both Applications Concurrently
Open an application account for the Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program and a separate one for your chosen Stanford graduate degree program as early as possible. You must indicate in both applications that you are applying to the other.

Identify two recommenders who can provide specific examples of how you demonstrate the KHS criteria. Do not register your recommenders in the KHS system until you are ready for them to submit their final letters.
- 6Draft Essays and Short Answers
Dedicate ample time to crafting your KHS personal essay and three short answer responses. Ensure your responses are authentic, demonstrate the KHS criteria, and adhere strictly to the word limits.
