1. Open an N26, Revolut, or Sparkasse Girokonto to get your German IBAN (e.g. DE89...).

Step 1: Book an Appointment at the Local Ausländerbehörde

• Visit your city's Foreigners' Office website (e.g. berlin.de/einwanderung, muenchen.de/auslaenderbehoerde).

Step 4: Receive Your PIN Letter & Collect Card

• Within 3 to 4 weeks, the Bundesdruckerei (Federal Printing Office in Berlin) prints your physical smart card.
• You will receive an official PIN Letter in your mailbox, followed by an appointment to pick up your plastic eAT Residence Card!

4 Rules for Smooth Residence Permit Processing

1. City Office Processing Speeds Vary Greatly: Small university towns (like Erlangen, Aachen, Passau) issue eAT cards in 3 to 4 weeks. Large metropolitan cities (like Berlin or Frankfurt) can take 3 to 6 months due to high volume.
2. The Fiktionsbescheinigung (Bridge Certificate): If your 1-year visa expires while you are waiting for your eAT appointment, the Ausländerbehörde issues a temporary paper document called a Fiktionsbescheinigung (§ 81 Abs. 4). This legally extends your visa and work rights while your card is being printed!
3. Notify Bank & Employer When You Get Your Card: Once you receive your physical eAT card, upload a scan to N26/Sparkasse and your employer to update your legal status in Germany.
4. Maintain Student Status (§ 16b): You must remain enrolled in a recognized university program to maintain your § 16b residence permit.
