Grading systems across Indian universities vary significantly. A 7.5 CGPA at an IIT or NIT often represents higher academic performance than an 8.5 CGPA at a private college.
To evaluate Indian applicants fairly, US university admissions offices use credential evaluation standards established by WES (World Education Services) and AACRAO (American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers).

- Credits are Weighted: WES does not simply take your average CGPA. They multiply individual subject grades by semester credit hours, giving higher weight to core engineering/CS courses over general electives.
- First Class Standing Matters: Indian degrees awarded with "First Class with Distinction" (typically >75% or >8.0 CGPA) convert to top-tier US GPAs of 3.5 to 4.0.
- No Penalty for Backlogs (If Cleared): US universities evaluate your final cleared marksheet. Cleared backlogs do not reduce your final converted GPA, though top R1 universities prefer candidates with zero active backlogs.
