WES Credential Evaluation Step-by-Step Manual for Indian Transcripts
Updated 31 August 2026 · 2 min read
Executive Summary: Why WES Evaluation is Mandatory
US graduate admissions committees require an official, standardized evaluation of your Indian academic records to convert your Indian marks into a US 4.0 GPA scale (WES GPA Conversion Guide).
World Education Services (WES) is the largest credential evaluation organization in North America.
Here is what Indian families must understand upfront:
- Order the "ICAP Course-by-Course" Package: You must select WES ICAP Course-by-Course ($217 USD). Do NOT select Basic or Document-by-Document evaluation, as US universities will reject them.
- Strict University Transmission Rule: Transcripts must be sent directly from your Indian university's Controller of Examinations office to WES. Transcripts uploaded by students or parents are immediately invalidated.
- Electronic Transcript Partnerships: Major Indian universities (VTU, JNTU, Anna Uni, DU, Mumbai Uni) now offer direct electronic transcript transmission to WES, saving weeks of physical courier delays!

Top 4 Reasons WES Rejects Indian Transcripts
- Missing WES Reference Number: If your 7-digit reference number is missing from the university dispatch envelope or electronic transfer note, WES cannot match the documents to your file.
- Submitting Marksheets Yourself: Never open sealed envelopes or upload scanned marksheets yourself unless explicitly instructed by WES.
- Incomplete Marksheets: You must submit marksheets for ALL semesters, including semesters with backlogs or re-examinations.
- Name Mismatches: Ensure your name on your WES account matches your official Indian passport exactly!
