Q.How does an Indian student apply for MEXT Scholarship?
Indian students primarily apply through the Embassy Recommendation route at the Embassy of Japan in New Delhi. You submit documents → appear for a written exam and interview at the embassy → the embassy nominates you to MEXT Japan for final selection.
Q.What exam is conducted at the Japanese Embassy for MEXT?
The written exam tests Japanese or English language proficiency and an academic subject related to your proposed field of study. The embassy also conducts a personal interview for shortlisted candidates.
Q.Is Japanese language required for MEXT Scholarship?
No Japanese language proficiency is required at the time of application for most Research Student and Undergraduate tracks. However, basic Japanese skills are an advantage and MEXT provides a Japanese language training period before your main programme begins.
Q.What is the MEXT Scholarship stipend in Indian Rupees?
Research students receive ¥148,000/month (~₹83,000/month at current rates). Undergraduate students receive ¥117,000/month (~₹65,000/month). This covers living expenses; tuition is separately waived by the university.
