In India, we evaluate students primarily by their overall CGPA or Percentage (e.g., "I have 8.5 CGPA from VTU, so I will get admission").

What is ECTS?

ECTS stands for European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System. It measures total student workload (classroom lectures + tutorial hours + self-study + exam prep).

• 1 ECTS Credit = 25 to 30 hours of total student work in Europe.
• A standard 3-Year German Bachelor's Degree = 180 ECTS.
• A standard 4-Year German Bachelor's Degree = 240 ECTS.

How German Universities Convert Indian Credits to ECTS

Indian universities (DU, VTU, Anna University, Mumbai University, JNTU, etc.) do not print ECTS on marksheets. They use local credit systems (usually 1 credit = 1 lecture hour/week).

Here is how German universities and Uni-Assist Portal evaluate your Indian credits:

Rule 1: The Total Workload Benchmark (Degree Duration)

• 3-Year Indian Bachelor's (B.Sc, B.Com, BCA, B.A.): Evaluated as 180 ECTS equivalent. Read: 3-Year Bachelor Acceptance.
• 4-Year Indian Bachelor's (B.Tech, B.E.): Evaluated as 240 ECTS equivalent.

Rule 2: The Proportional Course ECTS Formula

If a German university asks you to list your ECTS for specific subjects in a "Subject Form" or "Curriculum Analysis Form", use this official proportional formula:

# Real Example (4-Year B.Tech Student from VTU):

• Total credits required to graduate B.Tech: 160 Indian Credits over 4 years.
• Student took "Mathematics-1" worth 4 Indian Credits.
• Calculation: $4 \times \left( \frac{60 \times 4}{160} \right) = 4 \times \left( \frac{240}{160} \right) = 4 \times 1.5 = \mathbf{6\text{ ECTS}}$.
• Result: A 4-credit VTU Math subject counts as 6 ECTS in Germany.

Subject-Specific Credit Cutoffs (Real University Examples)

German Master’s degrees are strictly "Consecutive." You cannot change streams easily (e.g., switching from Mechanical Engineering to MS Computer Science is almost impossible at public universities).

Example A: MS Computer Science at TUM (Technical University of Munich)

To be eligible for MS CS at TUM (MS Cs Directory), your Indian transcript must prove:

• Min. 28 ECTS in Proficiency in Informatics (Data Structures, Algorithms, OS)
• Min. 10 ECTS in Theoretical Computer Science (Automata, Compilers)
• Min. 12 ECTS in Mathematics (Linear Algebra, Calculus, Discrete Math)
