Selection Process
The MEXT Research Students Scholarship typically follows an Embassy Recommendation route
The selection process is highly competitive and merit-based, conducted through Japanese embassies or consulates in the applicant's home country
It involves a First Screening that includes a rigorous review of application documents, written examinations (usually English and/or Japanese language proficiency), and an interview
The quality and feasibility of the applicant's Field of Study and Research Plan are crucial for evaluation
Successful candidates from the First Screening are then required to obtain a Letter of Provisional Acceptance from a Japanese university professor
A Second Screening and final university placement are then conducted by MEXT in Japan.
Renewal Policy
The scholarship period for Research Students is typically for a period of two years, or the necessary period for the completion of a Master's or Doctoral degree, including an optional 6-12 month period of intensive Japanese language training
The scholarship period may be extended upon approval by MEXT if the grantee fulfills specified requirements, typically related to academic progress and performance.
Application Process
- 1**Check Eligibility**
Carefully review the MEXT Scholarship eligibility criteria for Research Students, including age, nationality, academic background, and health requirements, as outlined in the official guidelines.
- 2**Identify Local Embassy**
Determine the Japanese Embassy or Consulate General in your country of nationality, as applications are submitted through them.
- 3**Download Guidelines & Forms**
Obtain the official Application Guidelines and all required application forms for FY2027 (e.g., Application Form, Placement Preference Form, Field of Study and Research Plan, Certificate of Health, Recommendation Letter Sample) from your local Japanese diplomatic mission's website or the Study in Japan website.
- 4**Prepare Documents**
Gather and meticulously prepare all necessary documents. This includes obtaining official academic transcripts, graduation certificates, writing a detailed Field of Study and Research Plan, securing recommendation letters from academic supervisors, and having a medical examination for the Certificate of Health. Ensure all documents strictly adhere to the specified format and quantity (originals and copies).
- 5**Submit Application**
Submit the complete application package to the Japanese Embassy or Consulate in your home country by their designated deadline, which is typically between April and May of the year prior to the scholarship start (e.g., April-May 2026 for April 2027 intake). MEXT in Japan conducts the Second Screening and makes the final selection of scholarship recipients and university placements. You will be notified of the results between January and March of the scholarship year.

The MEXT Research Student Scholarship is fully comprehensive. It covers your full tuition fees (including entrance examination and matriculation fees), provides a monthly stipend for living expenses (¥143,000-¥145,000, with a regional allowance for high-cost areas), and includes a round-trip economy class airfare to and from Japan. If needed, a period of intensive Japanese language training is also covered.
Q.Do I need to know Japanese to apply for this scholarship?
While the scholarship encourages applicants to be willing to learn Japanese and adapt to living in Japan, a high level of Japanese proficiency is often not an absolute prerequisite at the initial application stage for Research Students, especially for programs taught in English. Many programs offer preparatory Japanese language education. However, some departments or professors might prefer or require a certain level of Japanese, and proficiency can be an advantage.
Q.How competitive is the MEXT Research Student scholarship?
The MEXT Research Student Scholarship is highly competitive. It is considered one of the most prestigious fully funded scholarships globally, attracting a large number of applicants each year. The acceptance rate for the embassy route is estimated at 15-25%. Selection is based solely on merit, with a strong emphasis on academic performance, the quality of the research plan, and interview performance.
Q.What is the difference between the 'Embassy Recommendation' and 'University Recommendation' application routes?
There are two main application routes for the MEXT Scholarship. The 'Embassy Recommendation' route, which is more common, requires you to apply through the Japanese Embassy or Consulate in your home country.
